Every broken promise to yourself quietly teaches you that your own word doesn’t really count.
This is the pattern of consistently breaking the commitments you make to yourself – habits, limits, goals – while keeping the ones you make to other people.
1 Understand the core chain
- A personal commitment or limit is set (a habit, a boundary, a goal)
- When tested, it is broken more easily than a commitment to someone else
- Guilt or disappointment follows, but with no outside consequences
- Trust in yourself gradually wears down with each broken commitment
- Future commitments to yourself are made with less conviction, since you already expect to break them
“Every broken promise to yourself teaches your own mind that your word to yourself doesn’t really count.”
2 Recognise how it shows up
- Body: A quiet sense of disappointment or resignation after breaking a personal commitment.
- Thoughts: “It’s only for me, it doesn’t really matter this time”, “I never really keep my promises to myself.”
- Behaviours: Consistently putting other people’s requests before your own goals, dropping personal habits at the first difficulty.
One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.
3 The cycle how it keeps going
- Personal commitment set
- Broken more easily
- Guilt, no consequences
- Self-trust wears down
- Less conviction next time
…and back to the start.
4 Explore questions to go further
- Why does a commitment to myself feel less binding than one to someone else?
- What would change if I treated a promise to myself with the same weight as a promise to someone else?
- What is the smallest personal commitment I could make and actually keep this week?
5 Go deeper needs and beliefs
Need: To rebuild trust in your own word through small commitments you keep.
Belief: “Commitments to myself don’t really count the way commitments to others do.”
6 Next steps where to go from here
- Choose one small, specific personal commitment and follow through on it deliberately.
- Give a commitment to yourself the same priority in your diary as an outside commitment.
- Notice and name the moment a personal commitment starts being downplayed.
