A boundary that’s never set can’t really be respected – but the resentment builds up anyway.
This is the resentment that builds up when personal boundaries are never communicated, leaving other people unaware that they’ve crossed a line that was never stated.
1 Understand the core chain
- A personal boundary is crossed, without ever having been communicated directly
- Discomfort or irritation is felt inside, without being expressed
- The same boundary keeps being crossed, since it was never pointed out
- Resentment builds with every repetition
- The frustration eventually comes out indirectly or explosively, confusing the other person
“A boundary that has never been stated can’t really be respected – but the resentment builds up anyway.”
2 Recognise how it shows up
- Body: Growing tension or irritation every time the same situation happens again.
- Thoughts: “They should know by now that this bothers me”, “I shouldn’t have to say it out loud.”
- Behaviours: Staying silent through repeated irritation, then eventually reacting strongly to something that seems minor.
One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.
3 The cycle how it keeps going
- Boundary crossed, never stated
- Discomfort felt inside
- Crossed again
- Resentment grows
- Indirect or explosive frustration
…and back to the start.
4 Explore questions to go further
- Which boundary have I never actually said out loud, even though it has been crossed many times?
- What is the simplest way to communicate this boundary directly?
- What am I afraid will happen if I state it clearly?
5 Go deeper needs and beliefs
Need: For your personal boundaries to be known and respected.
Belief: “If I have to state my boundary, it means it doesn’t really matter, or the other person doesn’t care.”
6 Next steps where to go from here
- Identify one specific boundary you have never communicated directly.
- State it clearly and calmly, separately from any built-up resentment.
- Notice the relief of naming a boundary rather than silently keeping track of every time it’s crossed.
