Missing home doesn’t mean you made the wrong choice – it means something there mattered to you.
Missing home is the longing for familiar people, places, food, language or routines. It can hit unexpectedly – a holiday, a smell, bad news – even if you chose to leave.
1 Understand the core chain
- Something reminds you of home (a date, a call, a smell, an event you’re missing)
- A wave of longing or sadness comes up
- You tell yourself you shouldn’t feel this, since you chose this life
- The feeling is pushed away instead of acknowledged
- It comes back stronger at the next trigger
“Missing home doesn’t mean you made the wrong choice – it means something there mattered.”
2 Recognise how it shows up
- Body: A lump in the throat, sudden tiredness, tearfulness around holidays or family events.
- Thoughts: “I’m missing everything”, “I have no right to complain, I chose this.”
- Behaviours: Avoiding calls with family because they hurt, or calling constantly; idealising home.
One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.
3 The cycle how it keeps going
- Reminder of home
- Wave of longing
- “I shouldn’t feel this”
- Feeling pushed away
- Comes back stronger
…and back to the start.
4 Explore questions to go further
- What exactly do I miss – people, places, routines, language, a sense of belonging?
- Which of these can I partly bring with me or recreate where I am?
- Which dates or events are likely to be hard, and how can I prepare for them?
5 Go deeper needs and beliefs
Need: A sense of belonging and continuity, even far from home.
Belief: “If I chose to leave, I’m not allowed to miss it.”
6 Next steps where to go from here
- Name what you miss and allow yourself to feel it without judging it.
- Recreate one small ritual from home (a meal, a song, a weekly call).
- Plan ahead for hard dates: who you’ll talk to, what you’ll do.
