Postponed sadness doesn’t go away – it waits.
Unprocessed sadness is grief or hurt that was never fully felt or expressed – often for lack of time, safety or permission. It stays stored in the body.
1 Understand the core chain
- A loss or sad event happens
- No time or safety to feel it fully
- The sadness is put off “until later”
- Life goes on without dealing with it
- The sadness resurfaces, disconnected from its cause
“Postponed sadness doesn’t go away – it waits, often surfacing at moments that seem unrelated.”
2 Recognise how it shows up
- Body: Heaviness in the chest, sudden tears over small triggers, tiredness.
- Thoughts: “I don’t have time to feel this”, “I should be over it by now”, “I don’t know why I’m sad.”
- Behaviours: Keeping constantly busy to avoid silence, crying unexpectedly, avoiding reminders of the loss.
One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.
3 The cycle how it keeps going
- A reminder of the loss
- Sadness rises
- It’s postponed: “not the right time”
- It’s buried under activity
- It resurfaces later, disconnected from its cause
…and back to the start.
4 Explore questions to go further
- What sadness have I never let myself go all the way through?
- What would happen if I gave it 10 uninterrupted minutes?
- What did I need when the loss happened that I didn’t get?
5 Go deeper needs and beliefs
Need: Space and permission to grieve.
Belief: “I don’t have the right to be sad about this” or “Feeling it fully will be too much.”
6 Next steps where to go from here
- Block out a protected moment this week just to feel.
- Write an unsent letter about what was left unsaid or unfinished.
- Let one small trigger be an invitation to feel, not something to run from.
