Fear of Not Being Good Enough

When the bar for “enough” keeps moving, no effort ever gets there.

This is a persistent feeling that whatever you achieve, it will never be enough – not enough effort, not enough success, not enough as a person.

1 Understand the core chain

  1. An effort or achievement happens
  2. It’s immediately measured against a vague, ever-moving standard
  3. The achievement feels insufficient, whatever it is
  4. The urge to do more gets stronger
  5. Rest or satisfaction feels undeserved or dangerous

“When the bar for “enough” keeps moving, no effort ever arrives.”

2 Recognise how it shows up

  • Body: Restlessness even after achieving something, difficulty resting without guilt.
  • Thoughts: “I could have done more”, “It’s still not enough”, “I don’t deserve to rest.”
  • Behaviours: Constantly adding new tasks or goals, difficulty celebrating milestones, working through exhaustion.

One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.

3 The cycle how it keeps going

  1. Achievement
  2. Measured against a moving standard
  3. Feels insufficient
  4. Urge to do more
  5. Rest feels undeserved

…and back to the start.

4 Explore questions to go further

  • Where is the finish line that would finally count as “enough” – does it exist?
  • Who or what set this standard in the first place?
  • What would happen if I rested before everything was done?

5 Go deeper needs and beliefs

Need: A stable, inner sense of being enough that isn’t tied to constant output.

Belief: “I only count as much as what I produce or achieve.”

6 Next steps where to go from here

  • Write down a concrete point that counts as “enough” for one specific task.
  • Rest on purpose before a task is completely finished.
  • Name an achievement out loud as complete, without adding “but I could have…”
