Most travel insurance only pays for emergencies. Therapy, psychiatry and ongoing mental health care are usually excluded. Below are plans open to nomads and people living abroad that include some mental health cover – and what to check before you buy.
Travel insurance or health insurance?
Travel medical insurance (for example SafetyWing Essential) covers new, unexpected illness or injury. It does not cover therapy or psychiatry.
International health insurance works like normal health insurance abroad. This is the type that can cover sessions with a psychologist or psychiatrist.
Plans with mental health cover
SafetyWing – Nomad Insurance Complete
International health insurance, from US$177.50/month (age 18–39)
Mental health cover: Up to 10 outpatient visits a year with a psychologist, psychiatrist or licensed therapist, within the US$5,000 yearly outpatient limit. Inpatient psychiatric care up to 30 days.
Watch out for: 12-month commitment. Pre-existing conditions are not covered. Ongoing treatment needs pre-approval (the first visit does not).
Genki – Native Premium
International health insurance
Mental health cover: Psychiatry and talk therapy with licensed psychologists and psychotherapists, with prior approval. Therapy apps are covered only as part of approved therapy. The Basic plan only covers psychiatric hospital treatment.
Watch out for: 6-month waiting period for mental health care, except life-threatening emergencies.
Feather – International Health (Essential or Plus)
International health insurance
Mental health cover: Psychotherapy is covered.
Watch out for: 10-month waiting period before psychotherapy is covered. Check the plan documents for limits.
Cigna Global
International health insurance (Silver, Gold or Platinum)
Mental health cover: Mental health care in hospital or as a day patient is included in the core plans. Outpatient therapy needs the optional outpatient module.
Watch out for: Limits depend on the plan level you choose. The plans are medically underwritten, so past conditions can be excluded.
Allianz Care
International health insurance
Mental health cover: Outpatient psychiatry and psychotherapy are available through the optional outpatient plan, with no waiting period.
Watch out for: Not included in the core plan alone – you need to add the outpatient plan.
AXA Global Healthcare
International health insurance
Mental health cover: Mind Health service: up to six sessions with a psychologist a year, with no excess, plus a 24-hour line with counsellors.
Watch out for: Six sessions is a short course. Check what applies beyond that.
Before you buy, check
- Does it cover outpatient therapy, or only emergencies and hospital stays?
- How many sessions a year, and what is the yearly limit?
- Is there a waiting period before mental health care is covered?
- Are pre-existing conditions excluded? If you have had therapy before, it may count as one.
- Do you need pre-approval before starting treatment?
- Are online sessions covered?
- Are you covered in your home country and in the US, if you go there?
Your home insurance or a bank card may also cover some care abroad. Check before buying a second policy.
