Avoiding a difficult conversation doesn’t make it easier later – it just gives it more time to grow.
This is the pattern of putting off or getting around situations that involve discomfort, conflict or vulnerability, even when tackling them directly would solve the problem faster.
1 Understand the core chain
- A task or conversation involving discomfort needs to happen
- The anticipated discomfort feels bigger than the task itself
- Avoidance or distraction is chosen instead
- The underlying problem stays unresolved and often gets more complicated
- The eventual confrontation becomes even harder than it would have been at first
“Avoiding a difficult conversation rarely makes it easier later – it usually just gives the discomfort more time to grow.”
2 Recognise how it shows up
- Body: Tension or dread specifically linked to the conversation or task ahead.
- Thoughts: “I’ll deal with it later”, “Maybe it’ll sort itself out.”
- Behaviours: Putting off a specific conversation or task indefinitely, approaching the problem indirectly.
One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.
3 The cycle how it keeps going
- Difficult task needed
- Discomfort feels huge
- Avoidance chosen
- Problem grows
- Confrontation gets harder
…and back to the start.
4 Explore questions to go further
- What exactly am I afraid will happen if I deal with this directly?
- Has avoiding it actually made things easier, or more complicated?
- What would the most direct and simple version of this conversation or task look like?
5 Go deeper needs and beliefs
Need: Confidence in your ability to deal with discomfort or conflict directly.
Belief: “If I avoid this long enough, it will sort itself out or get easier.”
6 Next steps where to go from here
- Set a specific date and time to tackle the avoided task or conversation.
- Write the simplest possible version of what needs to be said or done.
- Notice the temporary relief of avoiding, and name what it actually costs you.
