Body Disconnection

A body that switches off to avoid discomfort often ends up switching off to comfort too.

Body disconnection is reduced awareness of physical sensations, needs and signals. It often develops as a way of coping with past discomfort or stress.

1 Understand the core chain

  1. Repeated physical discomfort happens over time
  2. Attention gradually turns away from physical sensations
  3. Body signals (hunger, tiredness, tension, pleasure) become hard to notice
  4. Needs go unmet, because they aren’t clearly registered
  5. The disconnection deepens as a familiar protective response

“A body put on standby to avoid discomfort often ends up switching off to comfort and pleasure too.”

2 Recognise how it shows up

  • Body: Struggling to notice hunger, tiredness or tension before they become extreme.
  • Thoughts: “I don’t really know what my body needs”, “I wear myself out without seeing it coming.”
  • Behaviours: Overriding physical signals, being surprised by tiredness you had ignored.

One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.

3 The cycle how it keeps going

  1. Physical discomfort
  2. Attention turns away
  3. Body signals fade
  4. Needs unmet
  5. Disconnection deepens

…and back to the start.

4 Explore questions to go further

  • When did listening to my body start to feel less safe than ignoring it?
  • What sensation can I notice right now, without judging it?
  • What might my body be trying to tell me that I’ve missed?

5 Go deeper needs and beliefs

Need: To feel safe enough to be present and aware in your body.

Belief: “Paying attention to my body will bring up more discomfort than staying disconnected.”

6 Next steps where to go from here

  • Practise a short daily body scan, noticing sensations without changing them.
  • Set reminders to check your basic physical needs (hunger, rest, tension).
  • Reconnect gradually and gently, without forcing intense awareness.
