Difficulty Identifying Emotions

You can’t work with an emotion you can’t name yet.

Difficulty identifying emotions is a reduced ability to notice, name or tell apart different feelings – experiencing emotion as a vague physical discomfort rather than a clear, nameable state.

1 Understand the core chain

  1. Something emotionally significant happens
  2. The body registers a vague discomfort
  3. No clear emotional label is available
  4. The discomfort is acted out without understanding why
  5. The behaviour is confusing, even to yourself

“You can’t work with an emotion you can’t name – the vagueness itself is often the first thing to address.”

2 Recognise how it shows up

  • Body: Tension or discomfort with no clear emotional word attached.
  • Thoughts: “I don’t know what I feel”, “Something’s wrong but I couldn’t say what”, “I just feel bad.”
  • Behaviours: Reacting to the unnamed discomfort with food, scrolling or irritability rather than dealing with the emotion.

One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.

3 The cycle how it keeps going

  1. An emotionally significant event
  2. Vague physical discomfort
  3. No label found
  4. The discomfort is acted out blindly
  5. Confusion about your own behaviour

…and back to the start.

4 Explore questions to go further

  • If this emotion had a name, even an approximate one, what could it be?
  • Where in my body is the sensation strongest right now?
  • What happened just before this sensation started?

5 Go deeper needs and beliefs

Need: Vocabulary and a safe space to learn what emotions feel like.

Belief: “My emotions are confusing and unreliable – there’s no point trying to name them.”

6 Next steps where to go from here

  • Use a simple list of emotions to try to label the sensation, even roughly.
  • Do a quick body scan to locate where the emotion sits physically.
  • Note what happened just before the feeling, to build the link over time.
