Difficulty Receiving Compliments

Deflecting every compliment quietly keeps the belief that you don’t deserve any.

This is the discomfort or automatic rejection of compliments, often linked to a belief that you don’t fully deserve the recognition you receive.

1 Understand the core chain

  1. A compliment or praise is given
  2. Immediate discomfort comes up
  3. The compliment is deflected, downplayed or redirected
  4. Real recognition is avoided
  5. The belief “I don’t really deserve it” stays intact

“Deflecting every compliment quietly keeps alive the belief that you don’t deserve a single one.”

2 Recognise how it shows up

  • Body: Sudden discomfort or urge to look away when you’re congratulated.
  • Thoughts: “It wasn’t a big deal”, “They’re just being nice”, “I don’t want to look arrogant.”
  • Behaviours: Immediately downplaying the success, giving all the credit to others, deflecting with humour.

One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.

3 The cycle how it keeps going

  1. Compliment given
  2. Discomfort comes up
  3. Compliment deflected
  4. Real recognition avoided
  5. Belief in being undeserving reinforced

…and back to the start.

4 Explore questions to go further

  • What would it say about me if I simply accepted this compliment as true?
  • Where did I learn that accepting praise was arrogant or risky?
  • What is lost – for me and for the other person – when a compliment is deflected?

5 Go deeper needs and beliefs

Need: To feel genuinely worthy of positive recognition.

Belief: “Accepting praise is arrogant – or I’ll be exposed as not deserving it.”

6 Next steps where to go from here

  • Answer one compliment this week with just “thank you”, nothing more.
  • Notice the urge to deflect and pause before giving in to it.
  • Write down one thing you’re genuinely proud of, without qualifying it.
