Bracing for the fall can end the joy faster than the fall itself.
Fear of positive emotions is discomfort or anxiety triggered by joy, excitement or satisfaction – often because good moments in the past were followed by loss or disappointment, making happiness feel dangerous.
1 Understand the core chain
- A positive or joyful moment begins
- You anticipate it being taken away
- The mind braces for disappointment instead of enjoying it
- The joy is cut short or sabotaged from within
- The belief “Happiness doesn’t last for me” is reinforced
“Bracing for the fall can end the joy faster than the fall itself would.”
2 Recognise how it shows up
- Body: Tension appearing even in good moments, difficulty relaxing when celebrating.
- Thoughts: “This is too good to last”, “Something bad is probably coming”, “I shouldn’t get attached to this feeling.”
- Behaviours: Downplaying good news, avoiding fully celebrating successes, expecting disappointment right after something good.
One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.
3 The cycle how it keeps going
- A joyful moment begins
- Anticipation of loss appears
- The mind braces instead of enjoying
- The joy is sabotaged inside
- “Happiness doesn’t last” is reinforced
…and back to the start.
4 Explore questions to go further
- Which positive moment in the past was followed by a real loss or disappointment?
- What would I feel if I enjoyed this moment fully, without bracing for the worst?
- Does bracing really protect me from anything, or does it just shorten the joy?
5 Go deeper needs and beliefs
Need: A safe space to feel joy without treating it as a warning sign.
Belief: “If I let myself be truly happy, I’m setting myself up for an even bigger fall.”
6 Next steps where to go from here
- Name the bracing thought out loud when it comes up, without acting on it.
- Let one small positive moment be fully felt, on purpose, without cutting it short.
- Track how often the expected “fall” actually followed the joy – and how often it didn’t.
