Holding On to the Past

Holding on too tightly to what was can quietly stop you from being fully present to what is.

Holding on to the past means clinging so tightly to an earlier version of your life, a relationship or your identity that it becomes hard to fully engage with the present.

1 Understand the core chain

  1. A significant chapter of life ends
  2. The past version of things is idealised or held on to tightly
  3. Present circumstances are compared unfavourably with the past
  4. Fully engaging with the present feels like betraying what was
  5. Present life stays under-invested, which strengthens the pull of the past

“Holding on too tightly to what was can quietly stop you from being fully present to what is.”

2 Recognise how it shows up

  • Body: A nostalgic melancholy when thinking about “how it used to be”.
  • Thoughts: “It was so much better before”, “Nothing compares to how things were.”
  • Behaviours: Frequently going back over old memories, resisting investing in the present.

One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.

3 The cycle how it keeps going

  1. Chapter ends
  2. Past idealised
  3. Present compared unfavourably
  4. Engaging feels like betrayal
  5. Present under-invested

…and back to the start.

4 Explore questions to go further

  • What I hold on to from the past – is it the real experience, or an idealised version?
  • What would it mean to invest fully in the present without erasing the past?
  • Could what the past gave me be found again in a new form?

5 Go deeper needs and beliefs

Need: To honour the past while staying fully present in your current life.

Belief: “Moving on means abandoning or dishonouring what came before.”

6 Next steps where to go from here

  • Name one genuinely good thing in the present, independent of the past.
  • Find a way to honour the past without staying stuck in it.
  • Notice the urge to compare and gently bring your attention back to the present.
