A life built entirely around other people’s expectations can look successful and still belong to someone else.
Living by other people’s expectations means shaping your major life decisions mainly around what others expect, often at the expense of your own wishes or direction.
1 Understand the core chain
- A major life decision comes up
- Other people’s expectations are given more weight than your own wishes
- The path that matches outside expectations is chosen, regardless of whether it fits you
- Your genuine personal wishes stay unexplored or pushed down
- Your life direction keeps being shaped by outside expectations rather than your own choice
“A life built entirely around other people’s expectations can look successful and still belong to someone else.”
2 Recognise how it shows up
- Body: A quiet sense of disconnection or flatness, despite meeting expectations.
- Thoughts: “This is what I’m supposed to want”, “I’ve never really asked myself what I want.”
- Behaviours: Choosing a career, relationship or life path mainly based on outside approval.
One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.
3 The cycle how it keeps going
- Decision to make
- Expectations come first
- Expected path chosen
- Own wishes unexplored
- Life shaped from outside
…and back to the start.
4 Explore questions to go further
- If other people’s opinions didn’t exist, what would I really choose here?
- Which personal wish have I put aside to meet an outside expectation?
- What would exploring this pushed-down wish cost me – and what would it free?
5 Go deeper needs and beliefs
Need: To live a life genuinely aligned with your own choices, not just with outside approval.
Belief: “My own wishes matter less than meeting other people’s expectations.”
6 Next steps where to go from here
- Identify one area of life shaped mainly by outside expectations rather than your own choice.
- Explore, even privately, what a personally chosen alternative could look like.
- Practise naming one personal wish directly, separately from what others expect.
