Worth that is never claimed often goes unrecognised, however real it is.
Struggling to negotiate your worth is discomfort with, or avoidance of, asking for fair pay, a raise or recognition – often linked to the belief that your value shouldn’t need to be actively claimed.
1 Understand the core chain
- An opportunity to negotiate pay or recognition comes up
- Discomfort at the idea of asking for more switches on, regardless of what you actually deserve
- The negotiation is avoided, minimised or approached apologetically
- The pay or recognition you get stays below your real contribution
- The pattern reinforces the belief that your worth isn’t worth actively defending
“Worth that isn’t actively claimed often goes unrecognised, however real it is.”
2 Recognise how it shows up
- Body: Tension or unease at the mere idea of asking for a raise or fair pay.
- Thoughts: “I don’t want to seem greedy or demanding”, “They should recognise my value without me asking”, “I’m not sure I deserve more.”
- Behaviours: Accepting the first offer without negotiating, apologising when asking for fair recognition.
One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.
3 The cycle how it keeps going
- Chance to negotiate
- Discomfort at asking
- Negotiation avoided
- Pay below contribution
- Belief reinforced
…and back to the start.
4 Explore questions to go further
- What evidence of my real contribution and value exists, regardless of how comfortable I feel asking?
- What would asking for fair pay look like, without apologising for it?
- Where did I learn that asking for what I’m worth was greedy or inappropriate?
5 Go deeper needs and beliefs
Need: To feel entitled to actively claim fair recognition for your real contribution.
Belief: “Asking for what I’m worth is greedy – or my value should be obvious without me asking.”
6 Next steps where to go from here
- Gather concrete evidence of your contribution before the next chance to negotiate.
- Practise stating a fair request directly, without wrapping it in apologies.
- Look at the real outcomes of past negotiations, not just the discomfort you expected.
