Always Starting Over

When every friendship has an end date, it’s tempting to stop investing – and that’s exactly what keeps you lonely.

Always starting over means rebuilding a social circle in every new place, then losing it when you or others leave. Over time, the repeated goodbyes can make you hold back from new connections.

1 Understand the core chain

  1. You meet people you like in a new place
  2. You or they leave, and the connection fades
  3. The goodbye hurts more than expected
  4. Next time, you invest less to protect yourself
  5. Connections stay shallow, which confirms that ‘friendships on the road don’t last’

“When every friendship has an end date, holding back feels safer – and keeps you lonely.”

2 Recognise how it shows up

  • Body: A dip in mood after departures, a tired, ‘here we go again’ feeling at new introductions.
  • Thoughts: “What’s the point, one of us will leave anyway”, “I don’t have the energy to start again.”
  • Behaviours: Keeping new people at a distance, not following up after a goodbye, staying in your own bubble.

One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.

3 The cycle how it keeps going

  1. New connection
  2. Departure
  3. Painful goodbye
  4. Investing less
  5. Shallow connections

…and back to the start.

4 Explore questions to go further

  • How many goodbyes have I had in the last year, and have I allowed myself to feel them?
  • Which friendships from the road are still alive today, and what kept them going?
  • Where am I holding back with someone right now because I expect them to leave?

5 Go deeper needs and beliefs

Need: Connections that can survive distance and time.

Belief: “If a connection is going to end, it’s not worth investing in.”

6 Next steps where to go from here

  • After a goodbye, schedule the first follow-up message or call before you leave.
  • Keep a short list of road friends and check in with one each week.
  • Allow yourself to feel the sadness of a goodbye instead of moving straight on.
