Fear of Judgement

When other people’s opinion feels like a verdict.

Fear of judgement is a persistent worry about being criticised or judged negatively. It leads to more self-monitoring, over-correcting how you behave, and avoiding situations where you might be watched.

1 Understand the core chain

  1. A situation where you’ll be seen
  2. You expect criticism
  3. Self-monitoring goes up
  4. Natural behaviour shuts down
  5. The awkward interaction confirms “People judge me”

“The more you watch yourself to avoid judgement, the more artificial you look – and the more likely you are to be judged.”

2 Recognise how it shows up

  • Body: Blushing, tense shoulders, avoiding eye contact.
  • Thoughts: “They think I’m ridiculous”, “I shouldn’t have said that”, “Everyone noticed.”
  • Behaviours: Rehearsing sentences in your head, not giving your opinion, replaying the conversation afterwards.

One isolated sign is not enough to define a pattern.

3 The cycle how it keeps going

  1. A situation where you’ll be seen
  2. Fear of judgement rises
  3. Self-monitoring, stiff behaviour
  4. The interaction feels fake
  5. The fear is reinforced

…and back to the start.

4 Explore questions to go further

  • Whose judgement am I really afraid of, and why does it matter so much?
  • What real evidence do I have that I’m being judged, rather than an assumption?
  • What would I do differently if judgement didn’t exist?

5 Go deeper needs and beliefs

Need: Belonging and social safety.

Belief: “My worth depends on other people’s approval.”

6 Next steps where to go from here

  • Act naturally in one small situation this week without monitoring yourself.
  • Ask someone you trust for honest feedback.
  • Notice the thought “they’re judging me” without automatically believing it.
